Why do people get married? :: Calgary wedding planner

After 4 years of marriage and almost 2 years of living in our (hopefully) “forever” home, I finally put up our wedding photos. Better late than never, right? I love walking by them right before heading down the stairs and seeing them as I walk to the top of of our stairs. Although 4 years of marriage is not very long, seeing my wedding photos still gives me a little thrill about my marriage. This simple act of putting up wedding photos gave me time to reflect on marriage…and why with 50% of marriages ending in divorce, people are still getting married.

Now, I am the first to admit that I am not your typical, hopeless Romantic wedding planner. I am not a big, romantic gesture kind of gal (they scare me) and my husband and I rarely exchange gifts, cards or flowers for romantic occasions or anniversaries…this is appalling to some of you, right?

This is not to say that we never “do anything” for ourselves as a couple because we certainly love traveling together and plan outings (big or small) for just the two of us. While I am not Romantic, I certainly believe in love. I just prefer to think of myself as Romantic in a quiet way. I find pleasure in the small, daily living moments in my life with my husband and our little family of 2 humans and 2 fur babies. I know that if I have someone that I want to be the first to hear all of my news, to hear how my day went and be a part of mundane stories of daily living…because that is love in the everyday.

To me, a strong relationship develops not necessarily on fun vacations and romantic getaways, but when you want to be a part of each other’s daily act of living: the grind of rush hour and work, going to the gym, getting the groceries and doing laundry. And despite this routine, you still want to be with that person every day, for the rest of your life because this person makes getting through the daily grind so much better.

I would like to leave you with my favourite quote about marriage. This is from the movie Shall We Dance with Susan Sarandon, Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. Susan Sarandon hires a private investigator to find out if her husband is having an affair. She asks the investigator why people get married, to which he replies “passion”. She then responds with:

“We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet… I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things… all of it, all of the time, every day. You’re saying ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go un-witnessed because I will be your witness’.”

Call me crazy, but to me, this is the romantic concept behind marriage, and why I believe in marriage. I go back to this quote all of the time when people ask me about relationships and marriage because I truly believe in this concept of having a witness to my life and being a witness to the life of someone else. As much to-do as there is about weddings, the most important thing behind a wedding celebration is the start of a marriage.
