Calgary is lucky to be filled with talented florists and floral designers for everything from corporate events and ‘just-because’ flowers to, of course, wedding flowers. Whether it’s lush, over-the-top creations or simple arrangements of greenery, flowers and plants add life and vivaciousness to your wedding.
But we don’t need to tell you that! Just take a look at how many ‘likes’ and ‘pins’ there are of the ever-popular peonies and succulents and you’ll know that brides (and grooms too) are crazy about flowers.
One of our favourite floral designers in Calgary and its surrounding area is Lyn Chapman of Flower Artistry. Lyn took time out of her busy schedule to chat with us about Flower Artistry and just how much work goes into those beautiful florals on a wedding day.
ECW: How and why did you get started in the floral industry?
FA: I always remember as a little girl loving art, nature and colours. Added to that, I grew up with the love of flowers and gardening. My grandma is my inspiration. I was in awe of her gardening skills. Growing up in the Philippines, I was always surrounded with lush Bougainvellea, Plumerias and Hibiscus. My love of both worlds, art and flowers, brought me to this amazing career!
I took my floral training in 1993 at Mount Royal University, and I’m constantly curious and learning from other floral designers.
ECW: How would you describe your design style, and how has it changed since you first started in the industry?
FA: I would say my style is romantic. Whether it is luxurious and opulent, or refined rustic, I am drawn to lush designs with an abundance of textures and movement. This is a marked departure from my early standard traditional or modern designs. My ultimate goal now is to incorporate a luxurious romantic design for each couple’s wedding based on their style and personality.
ECW: What is something you would like Brides and Grooms to know about wedding flowers?
FA: That for one perfect bridal bouquet to make, it will require approximately 150 people and involve 5 countries to plant, harvest, market, import and design. Think of the growers, harvesters, Auctioneers, importers/delivery Personnel, Wholesalers and Florists, taking extreme care to ensure that the precious flowers are ready to radiate beauty on their wedding day!
ECW: What is your favourite type of floral arrangement to create for weddings, and why?
FA: I love designing the Bride’s bouquet! I feel that it reflects of who she is, her style and personality. It is are the most photographed floral arrangement of all, and it’s a thrill to be able to capture’s the Bride’s joy as she bestows her bouquet.
ECW: Tell us what a typical day is like at the Flower Artistry headquarters.
FA: I would say a busy week that comprises 3 weddings, is surprisingly calm, consistent and organized. I try to delegate specific floral jobs that match the skills of the Floral Designer. Though we work long hours, we make sure to take time to laugh, listen to music, to take a break and have a nice cup of coffee (paired with decadent pastries) and watch The Ellen Show!
We are lucky not to have a traffic of a regular flower shop, so we can focus more on the wedding designs.
