What is a Mehndi and what is henna
Some quick term definitions here: “Mehndi” and “Henna” are often used interchangeably. Generally speaking, mehndi refers to the act of creating designs and patterns on the skin using henna paste. So, henna refers to the paste to create designs. *Note: say no to black henna — this is very toxic and dangerous to your skin!
This is a post in a series. You can read the introduction to this multi-event wedding for more about the design direction.
*This wedding occurred before Covid-19
For our purpose here, we will use the word Mehndi when referencing the event itself.
The Mehndi party in Hindu or Sikh culture is a pre-wedding ceremony event. It’s a night of fun, where the bride and guests get elaborate patterns drawn with henna paste on their feet, legs, hands and arms. Tradition says that the darker the henna stain, the happier the couple’s marriage will be.
Mehndi colours
We created a bit of an oasis feel to the Mehndi party decor and design. This event incorporated plenty of pinks, yellow, gold, orange and greens. While the colours were vibrant, we didn’t want to veer into the typical Indian wedding decor, so we added tropical greenery and only a small amount of glitz.
Mehndi floor plan layout
One side of the room was for lounging. Think low couches, low tables and cushions. The other side had some furniture, with a “seat of honour” for Sonia, and small tables and chairs for henna stations. We wanted everyone to feel like they were at a nail boutique where they could chat with each other while getting their henna applied.
Because henna application takes a while, entertainment and food is a must at Mehndi parties. A musician performed on a stage at the end of the room, where there were also tables for eating. We figured there might be dancing, so these tables were easily moved to the side to create a dance floor. Which totally happened, of course.
Overall, the Mehndi event is for celebrating with food, music, dance, and beautiful design. This is just one of the events to kick off a multi-day Indian wedding. So if you are ever invited to a multi-event Indian wedding, prepare for a marathon!
