I never grew up eating Pop Tarts (mainly because my mother refused to buy unhealthy, but fun stuff like that for us), so when I had my first one in university…I actually didn’t get what the big fuss was about. I find the pre-packaged ones a little cardboard-like, and apparently I am not the only one. After reading a post from Emily and seeing what Smitten Kitchen had to say as well, I set out to make my own pop tarts to see if I would like them better if they were home made.
Let’s be honest: I heart pastries and if they were not so bad for my cholesterol (and yours!), I would eat pastries all. day. long. These home made pop tarts are essentially like delicious, mini rectangle pies for me — I can’t stop! The best results were with cinnamon and sugar, as the jam got very messy, very quickly, but both flavours were gobbled up quickly between my husband and I.
Side note: we left them out on the cooling rack on the counter and came home to find one of them turned over and party crumbled…pretty sure the chubby cat had her share too…
Try them for yourself with the recipe here.
Yeah, you’re all jealous of my Pop Tart plates, aren’t you?
